Choose a source and a destination
Bring a document into editable Markdown, or convert it directly to a file for someone else. Writer and Converter are free. Conversion runs on your device; keep the source and check the result before sharing it.
Check the format matrix or follow the four-step conversion guide.

Each input below was tested against all eight output options on Windows on October 27, 2026. A check means the test produced a file and recovered the sample?s content markers. It does not mean the original layout, images, formulas, or formatting survive every route.
On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to see every output.

The 88 combinations used independent samples with text, links, lists, code, tables, and empty cells where the source format supports them. Outputs were read back; PNG pages were checked with OCR. Images used as inputs follow the OCR text path. PNG output is an archive of rendered pages, not an editable image format.
What each output keeps
| Output | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Markdown | Editable text and recovered structure. PDF figures can be embedded images; Office images generally become captions. |
| TXT | Plain text, list numbering, and link URLs. Formatting and images are removed; image captions remain. |
| HTML | Readable headings, lists, tables, links, and validated embedded PNG/JPEG images. External images are not fetched. |
| DOCX | Text, headings, basic emphasis, tables, and code. Images become captions; original page layout is not preserved. |
| A newly paginated document with tables, links, navigation, and embedded figures. Wide tables split into column groups with the first column repeated. | |
| XLSX | Tables become worksheets. Text outside tables is kept on a separate Document notes sheet. Exported values are text, not executable formulas. |
| PPTX | Text arranged into slides. Links retain their URLs, tables become text, and images become captions. Slide design and animation are not retained. |
| PNG pages | A ZIP containing rendered document pages. Appearance follows PDF export; any later text recovery uses OCR and can introduce errors. |
What still needs review
Office charts, merged cells, slide notes, animations, and complex layouts are not reconstructed. Spreadsheet imports use cached formula results rather than recalculating them. Common dates and percentages are recognized, but not every custom number format. PDF reading order and OCR names, numbers, and punctuation still need a check against the source.
Longer local documents were also tested: eight Markdown, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files across 64 output attempts. Of these, 62 completed read-back or PNG structure checks. One long document produced a PDF beyond the 50-page import limit; its PNG export stopped at the 30-page output limit. These results do not establish the same quality for every document or verify Linux and macOS.
File and page limits
- Conversion accepts up to 1 MiB of text plus 6 MiB of validated embedded figures, within an 8 MiB Markdown file limit.
- TXT and HTML inputs: 500,000 bytes. DOCX: 2 MiB. PDF, XLSX, PPTX, and raster images: 8 MiB each.
- PDF import: 50 pages, including at most 20 pages requiring OCR. PNG page export: 30 pages. PowerPoint: 200 slides.
- PDF tables: up to 32 columns, grouped when wider than eight. Spreadsheets: up to 20 worksheets, 1,000 rows and 32 columns per table; Excel cells have a 32,767-character limit.
- A batch accepts eight files and 32 MiB in total. Each output is limited to 16 MiB; rendering and recognition also have memory and time limits.
Convert and check the result
- Choose up to eight source files.
- Select the output format.
- Choose an output folder.
- Convert, then use Open file or Open folder to inspect each result.
Existing destination files are not overwritten. Conversion history lists earlier outputs and their review notes. For a complete example, read the conversion workflow. If a file fails, keep the original and use the troubleshooting guide.
