How to Open, View, and Edit .md Files on Windows

If you need to open a .md file on Windows, view Markdown files, or edit a local document without fighting the file association dialog, this guide shows the fastest path.

Use the browser editor if you only need to paste Markdown, preview it, and download a copy. No account is required.
Install the desktop app if you need to open real local files, use Open with, keep recent files, or recover from local history.
How to open a .md file on Windows
The easiest path is to right-click the file, choose Open with, and select VeloWrite.
When the association is set, opening a .md file should load it directly into the editor, not the marketing website.

How to view .md files on Windows
If you only want to read Markdown, open the file in VeloWrite and switch to Preview or Split view.
That gives you a clean rendered view for notes, READMEs, and documentation without leaving the file on disk.
How to edit Markdown files locally
Use the desktop app when the document matters. Native open and save, recent files, and local history snapshots make repeated edits easier to trust.
That is better than copying the text into a browser tab when you plan to keep the same Markdown file over time.
How Open with should work
The preview installer declares Markdown file associations for .md, .markdown, and .mdown files. Windows may still require you to choose VeloWrite once from the Open with menu before it appears as a familiar option.
A normal test is simple: right-click a Markdown file, choose Open with, select VeloWrite, and confirm the document opens in the editor. If the app is already running, the existing window should focus and open the selected file.

First confirm that the current VeloWrite preview is installed. Windows can hide newly installed apps from the short Open with list, so choose More apps or Choose another app, then browse for VeloWrite if needed.
If the file association still looks wrong, reinstall the current preview build and test with a new .md file. Corporate Windows policies can also restrict default-app changes, so a work computer may behave differently from a personal machine.

Remove old app remnants if you tested earlier builds
Early testers may still see old VeloMD shortcuts or app names if an older preview was installed before the rename. Those entries are separate from the current VeloWrite installer and can confuse Open with testing.
Uninstall older preview builds from Windows Apps, remove stale desktop shortcuts, then install the current VeloWrite release again. After that, retest Open with using a fresh Markdown file.
Installer status
The current Windows installer is unsigned, so SmartScreen may warn during install. That is expected for the preview stage and will be revisited before broader stable promotion.
Unsigned status does not mean the file association is disabled. It only means Windows may ask for extra confirmation before install or first launch.
